Central and Southern Italy in 3 weeks
We start in Rome for the Vatican, the ancient world, art and architecture. Then on to the Tuscan hill towns clinging to the cliffs. Next, the Renaissance glory of Florence. From there we take the train back to Rome, where we stay in and explore a different area of the city. We will head to the Adriatic coast to get away from the (other) tourists at the Gargano Peninsula and cave-dwelling Matera. Then on to Greek Paestum and the Amalfi Coast, then chaotic Naples, including a trip to Pompeii. We will add an extra day to see Herculaneum before taking the train back to Rome for our flight home.
Dinner in Rome
Here we are in Rome, right by the Vatican, after the journey that began yeaterday at 11:00 am. We didn’t get much sleep on the plane, so when we got here mid-afternoon we were ready for bed. But first, we must do as the Romans do and have some gelato. Then we wandered into the Vatican to verify that it really is right there. We’ll tour it in a couple days. Finally we had dinner at one of the few places open early and watched Rome walk by, or ride by on scooters.
